Family Therapy

The goal of family therapy is to help family members improve communication, solve family problems, understand and handle special family situations (for example, death, serious physical or mental illness, or child and adolescent issues), and create a better functioning home environment. One of the primary benefits is that your therapist has a perspective that is not influenced by personal emotion, that can provide unbiased feedback and guidance that benefits the family as a whole.

During family therapy, you can:

  • Examine your family's ability to solve problems and express thoughts and emotions in a productive manner
  • Explore family roles, rules and behavior patterns to identify issues that contribute to conflict — and ways to work through these issues
  • Identify your family's strengths, such as caring for one another, and weaknesses, such as difficulty confiding in one another
